The band was formed in 1903 to teach music to children of the miners of Shirebrook. Practices commenced over a chemists shop in the village. In a short period of time a successful brass band emerged and became known as the Shirebrook Silver Prize Band under its conductor Mr. J. Levick. During his 35 years with the band many prizes were won but the most notable was the Grand Shield at the Crystal Palace in 1927. In 1949 the band went under the wing of the Miners Welfare Scheme and became known as the Shirebrook Miners Welfare Band. In 1977 Mr. Seth Appleton took over the baton and further successes came.
